The original idea of bringing chainsaw carvings to Chetwynd came from two local residents, Marion Hoover and Betty Deck. The chainsaw carvings were chosen as an attraction for Chetwynd because it was believed that they showcased the true heart and soul of Chetwynd. The predominantly nature-focused theme of the carvings reflects the wild nature of the area.
The chainsaw carving project began as a part of the Rendezvous 92 Committee, which was created to help with celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Alaska (Alcan) highway. In the first year, the Rendezvous 92 Committee held 42 different fundraisers to raise the money to bring the first carvings into town. Some of these fundraisers included baking cookies, hosting dances, and events centered around the visit to town by the first woman in space.
We are currenlty working on our 9th International Carving Championship. Upon completion Chetwynd will showcase over 120 beautiful carvings for all to see!
